ENGLCOM ENTRY 4

Oct 13 - 16 2008 Journal 4

I will type in a new format for journals per week since topics are better discussed with this.

Let me start with what came into my mind first. I have the writing process in mind. Like the reading process, there are also strategies and techniques done when writing. Before you write, you think of the topics that are of interest to readers, since you write for others to read, plus, you have to write with sense.

"Brainstorming" is the right word that you need to know before you write something. You think of ideas that comes into your mind related to the topic when you brainstorm. Lately, brainstorming is not only done by groups but it can also be done individually. You don't filter out ideas when you brainstorm. It is done after you finished brainstorming.

The second strategy that came into my mind is "Outlining". When you outline, you follow a format like the one below:

I. ENGLCOM ENTRY 4
A. Think about pre-writing strategies
B. Type in the journal
1. In the Y! Groups
2. In the Blog

~spaces are placed within the outline, if the blog indents it to left, then please understand the topic, bear with me and my writing style.~

The topic nearest the left margin has the most significant idea within the outline. As the idea gets more insignificant or becomes a supporting detail, it indents to the right.

So, why do we do outlining? Some people can make essays better when they have an outline. You have a plan for your topic, together with the supporting ideas or details. Instead of just writing about the topic, the output will be better if you have thought and outlined your topic.

Third process that came into my mind consists of two pre-writing strategies, one is "Looping" and the other is "Freewriting".

So, what does a loop mean? It is a continuous circle that ends in the middle. So what does this have to do with writing? When you engage on looping, you write until you get to that middle or the center. That center will be your focus. You focus on the topics and get the parts of the loop that are of significance, value or can support the topic you are focusing on. On the other hand, freewriting can be understood by reading the strategy name. When you engage on freewriting, well, you write freely. Topics that come out of your mind are placed in a paper. Duration of minutes ranges from five to ten and you stop after time runs out. You base your paper to the topics or details written on the freewriting paper.

So, what have we done this week you may ask? Well, we did some writing, more writing, and more writing. ENGLCOM is dedicated to teaching us how to read and write. Descriptive Essays are now our current essay form. As we make an essay about topic/s that is/are important and/or of interest to us, we are told to "show" and not to "tell" in a descriptive essay. We use words for readers to know what we saw, heard, tasted, smelled and felt when they read our essay. Hopefully, my first draft essay about my online gaming would give inspiration to others and make them try playing the game. :D

Overview of Current Management practices of the SSS Cainta Branch

Planning:

All SSS Branches has this thing they call Target Coverage and Target Collection. Once a year, they plan for the Target Coverage and Target Collection. The TC1 or Target Coverage talks about the target number of members to be covered by the branch in addition to the current membership of employers, employees, household helpers, self-employed and voluntary members while Target Collections or TC1 are contribution collections of members. The Branch Head, in coordination with all supervisors, handles the planning of the Target Coverage and Target Collection.

They set g
oals/quotas for the branch to surpass and makes plans/decision based on the plans.

They also plan about what the responsibilities of each personnel are and at what point will they exert more effort to improve front line service to SSS members. There are times in the SSS wherein they have more members filing loans and the branch must be flexible with these problems.

Organizing:

SSS has this department called the CPMD or Competency and Personnel Management Department. This department, located in the Main Office, is in charge of the recruitment of workers for each branch/sections. The Branch heads coordinates with CPMD and organizes the files needed to be filled-out so CPMD could send workers to the branch.

Branch Heads also does the budgeting. They see to it that the budget given by the higher management is spent effectively and efficiently. They have this policy which states that budget spent should not exceed .4% of the total revenues of SSS as a whole. Transportation Expenditures such as car maintenance, gas budget and Capital Expenditures such as building maintenance, personnel salaries and wages, procurement of equipment and furniture and other miscellaneous expenses are the usual expenses of the branch.

Most of the time, the budget is not enough to supply the maintenance and needs of the employees so the branch head often donates for the branch's own good.

Leading:

Section Heads are the people that handles supervision within the employees. They submit reports based on the performance of the employees and gives it the the Branch Head. The Branch Head monitors the reports and makes decision based on the reports. When a worker is evaluated having poor performance, the branch head does not fire the worker immediately, rather, he/she recommends administrative saction from CPMD (Competency and Personnel Management Department) to the employee.

For employees whose performance meets the quota, benefits are given to them.

Benefits include:
  • Performance Bonus
  • 13th Month Bonus
  • Mid-Year Bonus
  • Birthday Cash Gift
  • Anniversary Bonus
  • Cash Gift

The Relationship Management Department is the one responsible for granting benefits to the employees of the System.

The Branch Head added that to get the full cooperation and establish teamwork among the employees, you must befriend them. They know each other as co-workers during office hours but as friends after. Communication within the branch is needed to relate real life with work. Remember that life outside work may affect the working skills/capabilities. When you have problems within your family, it is harder to do something that is assigned to you.

Controlling:

The Branch has this monthly meeting about the monthly progress and development. They talk about the branch when they meet the quota or not. SSS Cainta Branch never had a moment wherein they did not meet quota. They see to it that they meet the targets and if not, then they have this plan B.

Plan B:

1) Talk about the things they did that month.
2) Compare the months wherein they surpassed the quotas to the month wherein they did not.
3) List down all the factors that affected their downfall.
4) Plan what is needed to do.
5) Make decisions based on the planning process to surpass quota next month.

The Branch Head also coordinates with other branches. When they have to refer problems and cases handled by other branches. For example, when SSS members file for loan but the branch does not have the authority to give them the loan, the branch refers them to the specific branch to file. Another example is when the branch needs repair of computers; processing of referrals of various voichers for payment; requesting of supplies and building/office maintenance, they refer to the Main Office.

Data Capture plays a big role in the Controlling part. It is a preventive measure to those scams and frauds wanting to file loans and get heaps of cash without contributing to the collection. We use the biometric system in the data capture of SSS members done at the branch and file-processed at the ID Center, Main Office. Database is maintained in the Main Office. Various reports are done through MS Excel. We have Intranet for all personnel nationwide which we use for communication and exchanging information. We have a secured network to prevent others from hacking into our files.

"So all in all as a Branch Head,
I plan/set goals together with the Section Heads, organize the distribution assignment of personnel, how to implement the plans, direct/lead the personnel to carry out the plans, coordinate with various branches/departments of the System, other government agencies and other local government units, controls the branch by reviewing the performance of the different sections and personnel of the branch."

ENGLCOM ENTRY 3

Oct 6 - 9 Journal 3

Monday:

Last Monday, we discussed about the graphs and tables we made from the previous meeting day. I've realized that in interpreting graphs, you just have to take note of the items in the graph or table. Determine the highest and lowest points, and from when those lowest and highest points occur.

We also made an activity paper regarding the paper plate assignment. What we usually do in a day was put into non-prose form and illustrated in the paper plate. A pie graph was used to illustrate our time management. We made an essay regarding the pie graph, showing how time really is gold. This activity made me realize that my time management is not that good. I should really add more sleeping time...

Tuesday:

No ENGLCOM. Tuesday is LASARE day.

Wednesday:

This day, we discussed about summarizing and paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is putting a selection into your own words. You usually do it per paragraph while summarizing is shorter than paraphrasing. You only take the important parts for summarizing.

Plagiarism was also discussed last Wednesday. It is the act of stealing one's intellectual property. Punishments are given to those who commit this act. Stealing is punishable by law, not just by the La Salle committee.

There are ways for properly citing references and selections taken from others when you put it into your own work. Mostly, the APA style is used for these. You must not forget to cite the surname and copyright year when you want to include others' work into your own.

Thursday:

We discussed outlining last Thursday. You brainstorm first before you can outline. You fix all the things relevant to the topic. Then, you outline the ideas. You put the most important things near the left margin and the sub topics indents as the importance lessen.

We made an outline on how high school students apply to colleges. Hopefully, what I did was correct. :D

ENGLCOM ENTRY 2

Sept 29 - Oct 2 Journal 2

Monday:

"Activating one's schema" --- What does this statement mean to me? I'm really new to the word schema but I guess that's what I do before I read. I try to remember things when/before I read. Before, While and After Reading strategies were discussed last monday.

Tuesday:

The ENGLCOM Department provided us an introduction to the services of the main library which could help us in the near future. I know for a fact that CCS students don't rely much on books in the library, rather, they use the internet to search on things BUT having knowledge on to how we can use the facilities, borrow books and materials is an advantage.

We paid a lot for this. Might as well use it, right?

Wednesday:

NO CLASSES.

Thursday:

The professor discussed about people being visual beings. When someone tells them to do something, the people would either be:

* Following the tone of voice
* Follow the leader
* Follow what was said to do

So, yes. The second would usually be what the people are doing. In connection to the new topic which is non-prose selections, people comprehends easier and faster with non-prose selections. Examples include visual aids, pictures, signs and symbols, etc.

In a visual aid, it may consist of the following: graphs, charts and/or tables. You use these when you are presenting. Instead of reading a 1000-word paragraph to know that there aremore boys than girls in CCS, you can use graphs. :D

ENGLCOM ENTRY 1

September 22 - 25 Journal 1

Monday:

We discussed about the previous activity which measured how we critically think and solve the problems that we will be encountering in the future. The specific problem given to us is stated below:

There occurred a doomsday event. Ten survivors have to choose six within their group to start a new generation of the human race. The ten survivors are as follow : A young priest, a pregnant housewife, an architect, an old doctor, a young entertainer, a professor/philosopher, a farmer, a middle-aged social worker, an elderly scientist and a young artist.

What really caught our attention was the answer of the last group that presented. They wanted the young priest to preach God's teachings to the next generation and yet they want him to be the father of the next generation. This led us to a debate regarding spreading the gospel of God and yet not applying it. The priest will violate his good morale and commitment to God if ever he is forced to mate with the entertainer.

The activity really needs a lot of critical thinking to arrive at the right decision. It gave us a sneak peek to what critical thinking really mean.

Tuesday:

We had an activity that would help us apply critical thinking through reading. The professor asked us to read and explain a specific quote.

"Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare."

The quote said that setting a goal is pleasant but if you don't do anything to reach it then it will merely be a dream; and on the other hand, doing something for nothing leaves you with wasted time and effort.

Wednesday:

Main idea and details was further explained to us by the professor. Main idea being the key concept of a selection while on the other hand, details being the support of the main idea. Skimming, scanning, context clues and other forms of reading strategies were also tackled.

Thesis statements and topic sentences were compared and contrasted. The main idea of the entire selection is what you call the thesis statement while the main idea per paragraph of a selection is called the topic sentence.

Skimming and Scanning were also compared and contrasted. Skimming, a form of speed reading, is used to get the main idea or key concept of a selection while scanning, another form of speed reading, is used to get details.

The professor gave us a test activity that helped us determine the differences of skimming and scanning. We used skimming and scanning to answer the questions given. I'm sure that we will do a lot of skimming and scanning along the way. Hopefully, I get to buy the book for ENGLCOM so I don't have to borrow and it would help me read a lot easier.

Thursday:

We tackled the topic "context clues" which would help us determine the meaning of highfaluting words in a selection. She told us to answer activities in the book that contains context clues.

TREDONE ENTRY 1

Reasons why people believe in God..

Christine Bible is the book sacred to Christians, which they consider to be the inspired word of God. The Bible includes the Old Testament, which contains the sacred books of the Jews, and the New Testament, which begins with the birth of Jesus. Arguments rose because people want solid evidences that would make the Bible 100% true. The miracles that happened and words of God are written by human so, it could have been easily faked. Many people want scienctific evidences to believe.

I know that how we are put together in a way that can't be explained by science, but still, I think people believe in God because there just has to be something more.

When the people around you die, is that it? You live on earth for nothing at all? What would be the purpose in that? Human life just can't be here for no reason, and I believe that turns our hearts toward a belief in God.

Another thing that makes the people believe is suffering. What would be the purpose of suffering, or of anything for that matter, if there is no God? God doesn't take away suffering. To do that He would have to take away our free will, but he does go through it with us, and helps us. Suffering either builds us into better humans, or it shows that we are not such great humans. In one case, people look to God. In the other, people still look to God - to blame Him or worse people stop believing because their prayers were unanswered.

Where there is suffering, there is happiness. People believe in God because they find happiness in doing such. The joy of being alive, accomplishing something, having a perfect score in a test or maybe just being with your friends makes us humans believe more.

There are many reasons to believe in God, and these are only a few. Only faith binds us and these reasons to believe in God.

Eucharistic Miracle

The Most Holy Eucharistic Miracle of Santarem, Portugal

The Miracle happened in the village of Santarem Portugal, occured in February 16 1247 when a woman tried to snatch a Consecrated Host as a Jewish Sorceress told her to do to solve her husband's adultery issues.

The Host miraculously bled as the woman kept it in a knot, wrapped in a veil. The night after the first miracle, the Host was freed from the knot and elevated by angels who sang divine praises. They needed a priest to seal it in a ball of melted bees wax to stop the bleeding.

Nineteen years passed and an investigation was held, it was discovered that a second miracle occured. The Host had freed itself from the wax ball and was now in a little crystal ampoule.

The ampoule became a piece of relic. People started visiting the relic but as time passed by, the ampoule stopped its miraculous bleeding as the parts of the ampoule broke and the Host corrupted.

The Relics were scientifically analyzed in 1997 and was proven to be genuine and of a supernatural origin. It was again sealed in the Shrine of the Most Holy Miracle --- the Church of Saint Stephen of the Holy Miracle.

MAKRO

Established in the country in 1995, Makro is a company that caters to the various needs of professional customers and retail business. It is a high volume, low price, low cost, no-frills cash and carry wholesaler that provides the best buying conditions and products suited to the needs of its professional consumers. Pilpinas Makro Inc. is a partnership between SM Prime Investments of the Sy Group and SHV Holdings N.V.

Pilpinas Makro Inc. is a partnership between SM Prime Investments of the Sy Group and SHV Holdings N.V. of the Netherlands. Makro develops its activities together with local partners who understand local situations and traditions. The concept of distribution that Makro introduced to the Philippines is one that has been proven successful in may develop countries around the world.

Since Makro is a trade center that offers food and non-food products, they should make sure that they have the goods to sell by ordering the right amount of goods at the cheapest price possible from. So, how do they do it?

The answer: Makro Information System & Makro Business System

All 15 Branches of Makro use MIS to connect their system with other companies and MBS helps speed up ordering, control stocks and lessen distribution problems within branch. Makro Makati uses computers located in free spaces inside the store to access the MIS and MBS. They don't keep offices in Makro Makati to maximize the store floor.

MIS and MBS functions:

*

Check stocks or sales
*

Checks incoming deliveries
*

If limited stock, it endorse another branch
*

Updates itself to help users adjust

Like any/every business store, Makro follows a set of procedures as follows:

*

Makro orders goods from the supplier and specifies the schedule for delivery using the MIS.
*

Suppliers' Information System receives and confirms the order of Makro.
*

Once confirmed, the supplier makes sure that they have the right amount of goods to be delivered on time to avoid rejection of goods because Makro makes suppliers comply with the "No More, No Less Policy" and the "JIT" or "Just In Time Policy" of goods.
*

The delivery trucks are designated to docks depending on what goods/products they will deliver.
*

They follow a Tracking System Cycle which means the trucks will follow a specific route from the nearest Makro Branch to the next nearest one and so on.
*

They start distribution channel early because "Horeca" or "Hotel Restaurant and Caterer Buyers" buys early. Makro will lose costumer if they don't adjust with the Horeca.

Products are classified into 3 kinds:

*

Dry Food Products
*

Wet Food Products
*

Non-Food Products

Dry Food Department

As stated above, a specific date of delivery is set after ordering a certain quantity of products from the supplier. Certain steps for product approval are followed in order to be systematized and lessen errors made.

1.

As soon as the delivery truck arrives in the dock, the products ordered are then sent to the "GR" or "Good Receiving Hall".
2.

In the GR Hall, the receipts are checked, for these are the basis of receiving. These are checked to be able to make sure that the quantity of products ordered is correct.
3.

Makro, in this system, only accepts Just In Time deliveries. Meaning, products are neither delivered in advanced nor late.
4.

After which the goods are received, Makro sorts the goods according to their brand, size, kind, and packaging.
5.

Price tags, which contain the bar code and necessary information about the product, are then printed in the "ALC" or "Audit Logistics Center".

Wet Food Department

The products belonging to the Wet Food Department arrives at Makro. The products at this department are received in the wet dock. The Receiving time for the wet dock is at 5:00 AM till 10:00 AM in the morning. When the wet goods arrive, they are checked and sorted.

They are received in this order:

*

Fish
*

Meat
*

Poultry
*

Frozen goods

2.

The ones sorted for fresh meat and the ones to be stored in the freezer are separated.
3.

The fresh meats are brought into the fresh meat section.
4.

They use a weighing scale to weigh the goods.
5.

The ones to be stored are placed in the General Freezer following the "FIFO" or the "First In, First Out Policy".

There is a term called "LGR" or "Last Goods Received". It determines the span of spoilage. The product that is most susceptible to spoilage is fish so the fish gets the priority. The last one received is frozen goods because it doesn't spoil that easily. They are either placed in the freezer or the fresh meat section.

The general freezer usually keeps its temperature at -22 to -18 degrees Celsius. In the freezer, the policy FIFO is enforced. It means first in, first out. The reason behind this is to avoid spoilage. The JIT delivery or just in time delivery policy is strictly enforced in this area because the goods in the wet food department are highly perishable and if there goods don't arrive in time, they may spoil.

Non-Food Department

Makro stores are designed for customers to conveniently find what they need; the whole Makro is divided into two different departments namely the food and non-food departments. The non-food department offers a large array of different appliances, video and audio equipment, house and office furnitures, health and beauty products, apparel and do-it-yourself products.

*

Procedures of Non-Food Department are comparable with the Dry Food Department.

Policy for Product Return

As we all know in every store we cannot entirely eliminate errors especially in a very large scale business such as Makro. We can't always guarantee the performance of our products, but they've developed a system where their valued customers will be able to return products with potential factory defects.

For returning products, Makro follows these specific guidelines:

*

It was bought within EIGHT days from Makro.
*

The official invoice / proof of purchase / receipt are presented untampered.
*

Items returned should be in proper condition.
*

Electrical device untested prior the actual purchase is not applicable for return.
*

Items on "SALE" are not applicable for return.
*

Garments and other related sanitary products are not covered.
*

Products damaged due to CONSUMER NEGLIGENCE are not covered only damaged or faulty products are covered by the return and exchange policy.
*

Fresh items past its expiry dates are not covered by our return and exchange policy.

Now that we know what the procedures that Makro Makati follows to take care of products to sell, we talk about the customers.

Makro is not for everyone. If you want to buy goods from Makro, you have to be a member. Membership is free. When you apply for membership in Makro, you agree to their terms of service and fill up the required information needed. They input the information in their database and connects it to the "CMM" or "Costumer Marketing Management" Software.

Uses of CMM:

*

Once a customer buys in Makro, the system inputs how many, what and when they bought in Makro.
*

The system keeps a record of those information and displays Patterns of Buying or the daily / weekly / monthly transactions made by a costumer.
*

It predicts what the costumer will buy next.
*

It offers a substitute if product is not available.
*

The system helps the Inventory and Sales Department adjust to the information displayed by the CMM.

For example:

---A customer buys 150 packs of Ligo Sardines, 100 packs of Moo Chocolate Drink and 999 packs of Beam Toothpaste every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

*

The system records the products bought, the quantity and the days within a week wherein they made transaction.
*

The Inventory and Sales Department looks into the information and adjusts to it. If the customer buys every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday then they make sure to add the order.

This process lessens spoilage of goods/products.

Makro's Packaging System

Makro has a unique packaging system. They pack the goods according to the quantity its customers need. The following are reasons why products being sold in Makro are packed in such a way.

1.

Goods are packed in large quantities because Makro caters to business holders like sari-sari stores, mini-groceries, restaurants, and the like.
2.

Downsizing, meaning the quantity of products per packed has been lessened, has been implemented to cater to end-users, and also to lower the price on the case.

For example:

---The vegetables being sold in Makro have been packed in large quantities.

*

Downsizing of the packaging has been enforced due to the customers' suggestions.
*

Makro can also attract more customers because goods are not only for business holders, but as well as for household purposes.

Other Information:

*

Makro stores are designed for customers to conveniently find what they need and at the same time, maximizing space and efficiency of the store floor. They have created a system which no longer requires a warehouse, making Makro the warehouse itself.
*

With this system, customers will no longer wait for the product to be taken out from the warehouse in Makro. The product will be replenished / stocked in a regular basis using a forklift because the supplies of the products are located in the upper shelves so they can easily be transferred which are called above the light storage.
*

Also in Makro, the aisles are really wide; they are specially designed for the bulky carts of Makro and also for the forklifts to be able to navigate properly wide aisle are required.
*

The bulky Makro carts are also efficiently designed in order for customers to easily transfer the big wholesale products, which are typically packaged in boxes so a big cart is really a must.
